OUR HISTORY

The Curtin Uni Wesley Tigers emerged in the successful merger of the Old Wesley Football Club and the W.A.I.T Tigers. Officially launched as the Curtin Uni Wesley Tigers, the club began its journey ahead of the 1990 season.

1966 – Foundation year of the OWAFC in D Grade, won premiership, founding members – Arthur Marshall, Stuart Joint, Roger Burrows. Coach & President Arthur Marshall.

1967 – Runners up in C Grade.

1968 – Promoted to B Grade, second side starts in E Grade.

1969 – Lack of numbers, back to one side, constitution amended, no need to be an Old Wesley Collegian.

1970 – Back to two side, B & F grades

1971 – Club moves from Wesley College to Collins Oval.

1972 – B colts added, B Grade lose GF to Uni, promoted to A Grade, B Nelson wins WAAFL B Grade goal kicking award.

1973 – Club now A League, A Reserves, A Colts – very tough times.

1974 – Addition of fourth side in E Grade – still very tough times – Dexter Davies appointed head coach.

1975 – A Colts lose GF.

1976 – WAAFL drops reserve format, A Grade, A Colts, D & G Grades. Mike Petkovich wins WAAFL D Grade F &B

1977 – Competition still very tough, D Grade to F, G to H

1978 – Steve Arnott appointed Head Coach, A Grade lose Preliminary Final. Ian McCarry wins WAAFL A Colts F & B. Brynn Chute, Alec Gryta, Greg Higham selected in state team.

1979 – F Grade to E, A Grade lose PF again. Steve Arnott, Nick Belyea, Brynn Chute, Greg Higham selected in state team. Brynn Chute becomes an All-Australian Amateur.

1980 – One of the clubs’ best years. A Grade minor Premiers, lose GF to Nollamara. John & Ken Duffy, Brad Gray selected in State Team. Steve Arnott wins WAAFL A Grade goal kicking award. Social events held at Leederville Bowling Club.

1981 – E Grade lose GF. Nick Belyea (Captain), Gerard Hunt, Tony Power selected in State Team. Tony Power wins WAAFL A Grade goal kicking award.

1982 – Ken Duffy (Vice-Captain) of State Team. Andrew Bockman wins WAAFL A Colts F & B. Social events held at Civic Centre Bowling Club.

1983 – A Grade wins Elimination Final, lose Semi Final. A Colts lose Elimination Final. C Colts added. Ken Pride, Gerard Hunt selected in State Team. Ken Pride wins WAAFL A Grade goal kicking award, kicks 100 goals.

1984 – Club consists of A, D, I Grades, A & D Colts. I Grade lose GF. Ken Duffy vice-captain of State Team.

1985 – A Grade defeat Wembley in last game of the year to stay in A Grade by 0.01%. Murray Vitlich selected in State Team.

1986 – “H’s” Heroes gain some media exposure. A Grade have a better year.

1987 – Merger with Trinity Aquinas fails. Barrie Quick appointed Head Coach. A Grade lose GF to Mt Lawley. No more H Grade. Social events held at South Perth Bowling Club.

1988 – A & F Grade lose Elimination Finals. Brynn Chute wins WAAFL A Grade F & B.

1989 – F Grade lose GF. Ken Pride wins WAAFL A Grade goal kicking award.

1969 – The Club was formed under the name WAIT Amateur Football Club, with a senior side in ‘F’ Grade and a ‘B’ Colts team. The Colts won only three games, but the seniors performed admirably, and narrowly lost the first semifinal. The Inaugural President was Graham Marion.

1972 – The second senior side was added, with the top side now being in ‘B’ Grade. The Colts won the Clubs first premiership, when Chris Biris coached them to an 11 point win.

1973 – The top side ‘B’ Grade, after losing only three games all year, lost the second semifinal and preliminary final narrowly to finish third.

1974 – ‘D’ Grade, the third senior side which was introduced in the previous year, really struggled. They lost all 18 games and finished with a percentage of 13.3%. On June 29, they had a massive 61 goals 17 points kicked against them, which is the highest score kicked against the Club.

1977 – With the top side back in ‘B’ Grade, the colts lost the preliminary final after a strong season, when they lost only two qualifying games.

The next finals appearance was again the Colts, when they lost the first semi final in 1979.

1981 – Was perhaps the Clubs darkest year. The top side earned relegation to ‘C’ Grade when they failed to win a game. The ‘F’ Grade and ‘K’ Grade with new coach Paul Carroll, in their second season, also struggled for wins, leaving the Colts, with seven wins, to lead the way.

1982 – ‘H’ Grade (seconds) narrowly lost the first semi final, as did the ‘C’ Grade (top side). Ted Kosicki, coaching for the first time, got the Club its’ second premiership 10 years after the first, when the Colts easily beat Dianella. Three players won WAAFL medals, Stuart Crole (‘C’ Grade), Eddie Jokovich (‘C’ Colts) and Paul Carroll (‘K’ Grade). The ‘H’ Grade also kicked a Club record when they posted 41.36 during the year.

1983 – Continued the upward trend. The Colts, now coached by Ross Bradley, made it back to back premierships when they accounted for Whitfords. The ‘C’ Grade, coached for the first time by former Subiaco champion Ken Bell, missed out on a Grand Final berth when they lost the preliminary final 13.17 (95) to 15.8 (98). Garry Lawrence was elected President, thus sowing the seed for the building of the clubrooms.

1984 – Promoted to ‘B’ Grade, lost the Preliminary Final. The ‘K’ Grade, coached by Paul Carroll, gave the Club its first senior premiership, its fourth overall, and its third in three years when they won the Grand Final by 6 points.

1985 – ‘B’ Grade coached by Ken Duffy, lost the first semi final to finish fourth. The ‘G’ and ‘J’ Grades both lost the elimination finals to finish fifth.

1987 – The Club became incorporated under the new name of “Curtin University of Technology Amateur Football Club Inc”.

1989 – All sides struggled. The top side finished last facing ‘C’ Grade relegation. A highlight of 1989 was the introduction of the first ever Curtin Tigers Ladies Team, which competed in the Women’s Sunday League, coached by Norm Hardwick they finished fourth after reaching the first semi final.

1989 also saw our clubrooms at South Oval becoming operational. Due largely to the persistence of Garry Lawrence, the clubrooms are the basis on which the Club can secure its future.

1990 – What a year, safe to say there were some teething problems. We started with A Grade Men & Ladies, A Colts, C & E Grade, A Grade Ladies finish third. Brynn Chute wins his fifth Club F & B in a row.

1991 – Jeff Miller selected as our second All Australian Amateur.

1992 – Relegated to B, D & H Grades, B Colts. Ladies team folded, did not return till 2017.

1994 – B Grade lose GF.

1996 – Relegated to C, F & J Grades, C Colts finish third.

1997 – WAAFL change to C Grade, C Reserves. C Grade lose GF, C Colts win Flag.

1998 – G Grade win Flag.

1999 – C Grade & C Colts both lose GF’s, C Reserves win Flag.

2000 – C Grade finish third, C Reserves & G Grade both lose GF’s, C Colts win Flag.

2001 – Fourth senior side started. Promoted to B Grade, B Reserves, E Grade, E Reserves, B Colts.  Trent Cooper appointed as Club Coach.

2002 – WAAFL change format again. B & B Reserves, AB Thirds, AB Fourths, B Colts.

2003 – B Grade & B Reserves both lose GF’s. Trent Cooper selected as our third All Australian Amateur, wins Tetley Medal – best player of the series.

2004 – B Reserves lose GF

2005 – B & B Reserves both lose GF’s. A Thirds finish third.

2006 – Promoted to A Grade, A Reserves, A Thirds, E Grade, A Colts.

2007 – Second Colts side added, A & C Colts.

2008 – Scott Horsburgh selected as our fourth All Australian Amateur.

2009 – Format changed again. A & A Reserves, E & E Reserves, A & D Colts. E Grade lose GF.

2010 – E Reserves win Flag. Earl Spalding appointed as Club Coach.

2011 – Teams A & A Reserves, D1 & D1 Reserves, E2, A & E Colts. A Colts lose GF.

2012 – Relegated to B & B Reserves, D2 & D2 Reserves, E2, B & E Colts. WINNERS. B Grade, D2 Reserves, B Colts are win Flags. Massive year.

2013 – Back into A Grade, MASSIVE RESULT, WE WIN OUR FIRST A GRADE FLAG. Steve Gravina wins his sixth club F & B.

2014 – A Grade lose GF, D1 Reserves finish third.

2015 – A Grade lose GF, E3’s win Flag.

2016 – Mark Hayter & Dean Diamond inducted into Life Members’ Hall Of Fame.

2017 – Name changed to Curtin University Wesley Football Club, addition of orange to our colours. Great News, A Grade Ladies are back.

2018 – D1 Reserves lose GF, A Grade Ladies finish third.

2019 – Relegated to B & B Reserves, D1 & D1 Reserves, E2, B & E Colts, A Ladies. Craig white appointed as Club Coach. Massive year, A Grade Ladies win our first Ladies A Grade Flag. B & B Reserves & D1’s all win Flags, B Colts lose GF.

2020 – More Flags to A Grade Ladies, A Colts, C5 Reserves. A Reserves & E3’s lose GF’s. Second Ladies side added, start in C3. A Grade finish third. Mark Hayter becomes a Life Member of the WAAFL.

2021 – GREAT NEWS – we welcome the Integrated Team to our great club to make it even greater. What a year B Grade Integrated win Flag. A Grade Ladies win flag to make it three in a row. A Grade Reserves win Flag. A Grade, C5 Reserves, Ladies C4’s all lose GF’s .

2022 – C5 & C5 Reserves both win flags. A Grade & E2’s lose GF’s. Trent Cooper inducted into the WAAFL Hall of Fame.

2023 – MASSIVE YEAR – Second Men’s A Grade Flag, A Colts, C4 Reserves & Integrated B Grade all win flags. Ladies A Grade narrowly lose GF.
